Teaming Up
MBU’s president, Dr. Alton Lacey, presented Albert Pujols a $9,000 check at Busch Stadium before the Cardinals-Braves game Sept. 9.
The gift, which will benefit the Pujols Family Foundation, was the result of funds raised at this year’s MBU Health and Sport Sciences Golf Tournament.
“The opportunity for Missouri Baptist University to assist Albert and Deidre Pujols in their work in St. Louis and the Dominican Republic is an honor,” Lacey said. “The Pujols Foundation has helped improve the quality of lives for a countless number of people throughout the world.”
It’s part of a burgeoning partnership between MBU and the Pujols Foundation. Earlier this fall, the University hosted a Pujols Foundation basketball tournament.
The Pujols Foundation, founded by Pujols and his wife, Deidre, exists to help those living with Down syndrome in St. Louis and improve the lives of the impoverished in the Dominican Republic. MBU’s Health and Sport Sciences Division is committed to promoting intellectual, spiritual and professional development, striving to enhance the quality of life through the advancement of knowledge in health, sport management and human performance.
MBU sold hundreds of Cardinals’ tickets for Missouri Baptist University’s annual Night at the Ballpark. Prior to the game, Dr. Andy Chambers, MBU senior vice president for student development, threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday cut their time at the World Series parade short, instead opting to visit MBU for a very worthy cause

The Carl and Deloris Petty Sports and Recreation Complex opened four days before its formal dedication for a very deserving cause.
MBU hosted the first annual Albert Pujols All-Star Basketball Game Oct. 30, two days after the St. Louis Cardinals won the World Series. MBU’s Varsity Basketball Team competed against Pujols’ All-Star Team, which consists of teenagers and young adults who have Down syndrome.
The event was closed to the public.
“I cannot think of a more appropriate event to host as part of the celebration surrounding the University’s new Carl and Deloris Petty Sports and Recreation Complex,” said Dr. R. Alton Lacey, MBU president. “The opportunity for MBU to continue to help Albert and Diedre with their work is a privilege.”
Pujols and Matt Holiday left the Cardinals’ World Series victory parade and celebration at Busch Stadium just in time to make an appearance at the event. They were joined by a host of other celebrity athletes including Aeneas Williams, Jahidi White, Kerry Robinson, Mike Matheny, Jackie-Joyner Kersee, Meadowlark Lemon and Ryan Coyne.
